On April 14, 1966, the first four-page Contractors Hot Line “want-to-buy” newsletter was distributed by an Iowa contractor and his wife to industry professionals searching for an easier way to locate and sell equipment in the Midwest. The success of the newsletter became the foundation for Heartland Communications Group, Inc., which has launched dozens of publications over the last five decades. Today, the company produces more than 20 print magazines, digital publications, and annual guides for the agriculture, construction, aviation, industrial machines, and consumer lifestyle markets. While Heartland Communications Group Inc. continues to adhere to the philosophy of connecting buyers and sellers, it has expanded its offerings over the years to provide a full range of marketing services—from print and electronic advertising, editorial and public relations, subscriptions, list marketing, bulk mailing, and graphic design. Based on the needs of its clients and readers, its products now reach a global audience. The company operates from its home office in Fort Dodge, as well as satellite offices in Des Moines, Iowa; Kansas City, Mo.; Lincoln, Neb.; Manitowoc, Wis.; Phoenix, Ariz.; Denver, Colo.; and London, England. According to company President and CEO, Gale W. McKinney, “Heartland has succeeded for 50 years because of our staff’s dedication, the personal relationships we have developed, and the customized solutions we consistently tailor for our clients to reach their customers. Quite frankly, in some ways we are a bit of a throwback—relying on the attributes of a strong work ethic and a dedicated commitment to our clients’ success. These values learned through our history combined with an array of new marketing innovations will provide Heartland with a bright future.”
Whether you raise livestock, dairy cows, crops or just enjoy old tractors or living the rural life, Heartland’s Agriculture division offers abundant opportunities for our clients to cultivate relationships with our audiences. Since its founding in 1978, Farmers Hot Line has provided the industry an active equipment marketplace and relevant information about agriculture and livestock products and services through its five regional editions and recurring special editions. Heartland’s Livestock Media Group publishes the monthly editorial-driven magazines American Cattleman and American Dairyman to help readers nourish successful operations. Consumer editorial titles AcreageLife and Chicken Whisperer entertain and engage lovers of country living. The division also offers the Antique Tractor Guide, Compact Tractor Guide, Farm Equipment Guide, Transportation Dimension Guide, and Iron Memories, which are the authoritative resources for prices, serial numbers and specifications from the leading manufacturers.
Heartland’s Aviation division provides multimedia solutions to buyers and sellers of private and business aircraft, vintage aircraft and aviation-related properties. Our publications circulate worldwide to qualified fixed-base operators, aviation departments, dealers, brokers, and parts and service companies. Since 1978, Aviators Hot Line has been a primary monthly lead source of small single- and multi-engine piston aircraft for sale. Introduced in 1991, Business Air is our monthly magazine dedicated to corporate jets and turbine aircraft. Rising to meet the diverse needs of our industry, we have expanded our offerings to include Aviators Properties, Light Aviation, War Birds & Vintage Aircraft, and Flying China.
Heartland’s story began at an Iowa kitchen table on April 14, 1966, with a four-page want-to-buy newsletter called Contractors Hot Line. Since its humble beginnings, the weekly print and digital magazine has expanded to encompass new and used equipment, parts and attachments, equipment auctions and industry services. The division also publishes the monthly Parts Connection and the annual Attachment Connection manufacturer directory. Our editorial-driven publications—Crane & Rigging Hot Line, Lift and Access, and Lift & Hoist International— provide in-depth information on product trends, equipment technology and industry news. Monthly digital titles TruckerZine, MyEquipAuctions, and Construction E-Update are resources for the transportation industry and those seeking heavy equipment auctions and auction results, respectively. The division also offers the annual Construction Equipment Guide, Crane Guide, Material Handling Guide, and Transportation Dimension Guide, which are the authoritative resources for prices, serial numbers and specifications from the leading manufacturers.
Since 1983, Heartland’s Industrial division has offered the premier national marketplace for the metal fabrication industry. Distributed in print and digital formats, the weekly Industrial Machine Trader connects buyers and sellers of metalworking machinery, parts, tooling and supplies. The magazine also produces Midwest Regional and Manufacturers Showcase editions monthly. Each month, Fabricators Hot Line features new and used equipment, products and services for the metal-forming and fabricating industry.
